Heroes

1. “Don’t forget, you are the hero of your own story.” — Greg Boyle

This quote resonates with me a lot. Over the last couple of years, I have come to a realization that nobody can make us truly happy except for ourselves. It is not a supercilious remark to belittle others. What I mean is that happiness comes from the inside, but sometimes we make others responsible for our contentment. We are the protagonists of our own story, we are its heroes, and we should feel empowered to make our life better every day. Actually, when I had this epiphany, I felt so relieved. Self-sufficiency is one of the keys to harmony. Don’t forget — you are the hero of your own story. (see the definite article in the individualizing function and think what it means!)

2. On January 20,1981 Ronald Reagan gave a speech and expressed a powerful idea: “Those who say that we’re in a time when there are no heroes, they just don’t know where to look.” At that time the wound that the war had left was still fresh, and people had a certain concept of a hero in their mind — an image of a soldier. We would never forget the bravery of those who ‘gave their lives, that that nation might live’, however, time passes, and (thank God) there’s no war. But heroes have not perished! So many good deeds escape our notice every day. Albeit people may not give their lives (sometimes they still do, we just don’t know), some of them save lives every day (think of all the doctors, policemen, firefighters, etc.), or help to those in dire straits, or just a good deed like feeding a stray cat. This is what Ronald Reagan tried to draw people’s attention to, and this is what we should remember now. There are heroes, and they are among us.

3. “A father is neither an anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.” — Anita Room

I just would like to say a few words about this heart-piercing quote. It is very personal, and has evoked so many emotions in me… My dad keeps telling me how he wishes he could protect me from everything taking me under his wing, but since it’s impossible and I can learn only from my own mistakes, he says I’ll always have his shoulder to cry on and his advice when I need some. He has always been my hero and will always be. My guiding light indeed.
